Crowdfunding Project for
Small Schools & Learning Communities Tour
In 1997 I spent ten weeks travelling around England and Scotland in a touring caravan visiting 17 small schools affiliated to Human Scale Education (accompanied by my two children then aged 7 and 12 years). Twenty-five years have now passed since I completed that tour and in September I will be completing another one – again travelling in a touring caravan.
Three of the schools I visited in 1997 are still going strong so I’ll be revisiting them (as well as two other small schools which have survived the test of time) to discover the reasons behind each success story. I will also be visiting some new learning communities which have been set up around the UK by home-educating families (including Charlotte Church’s Awen Project in South Wales). Additionally, I’ll be visiting Hove Micro School, as well as talking to Jennifer Smith who is about to set up her own Micro School in Horsham.
The cost of travelling around the schools and communities in a touring caravan is expected to be in the region of £3,500 and a Crowdfunder Project is being launched on 5th August in an effort to raise the required funds. If you would like to support the project, please leave your email below and I will send you a link to the Crowdfunder Page as soon as it goes live.
Week 1 - (1) Park School, Dartington, Devon
(0) Writers’ Retreat, Devon (see below)
Week 2 – (3) Awen Project, Dinas Powys, South Wales
Week 3 - (6) New Forest Small School, Lyndhurst, Hampshire
While in Devon I will also be spending two days at a ‘Changemakers’ Writing Retreat led by Max Hope for people who write with a view to contributing to changes in society (very appropriate as my book is intended to help people think differently about education).
After my tour in 1997 I used my findings as the basis of my MA in Education by Research. I also wrote a 50-page publication on Small Schools for HSE, as well as a number of magazine articles. The findings of my latest tour will be published in my second book ‘The Small School Years: human scale education in practice in small schools and small learning communities’ - due for publication May 2023.
