    Restorative Justice

Evidence shows a whole school Restorative Practice approach reduces anti-social behaviour and bullying; increases attendance; leads to fewer exclusions; and improved achievements.

In schools Restorative Practice can be used between pupils, staff members, or pupil/staff relationships. The process of Restorative Justice means individuals have an opportunity to express their feelings, and to feel listened to. Problems that can lead to serious emotional harm, can be resolved amicably, hopefully with both sides feeling much happier after the process has taken place.

Peer Mediation is when a group of pupils are trained in Restorative Justice techniques. Usually a rota is set up so that trained Pupil Mediators or on duty at break times. If any child has an issue during the break they can approach the Mediators on duty who will use the RJ techniques they have been taught in an effort to resolve the conflict.

Family Group Conferencing is another form of Restorative Practice when family issues can be resolved. School life can be badly affected if a child is suffering conflict at home. A referral can be made for a Family Group Conference to take place.
