Longthwaite Writers' Retreat
The perfect place to make progress with your writing in peaceful surroundings.

After renovating our 300-year-old Cumbrian Farmhouse - situated just outside the Lake District National Park in Northern England (not far from the Scottish Border) - we are now taking bookings for individual writers who wish to spend a few days (or longer) here working on a writing project. You will be well looked after with healthy plant-based meals and home-made cakes (and no household chores to do).
We have two guest bedrooms available – one overlooking our front garden, grazing fields and fells beyond; the other overlooking our back garden where we grow our own veg, have a wildlife garden, summerhouse and pond with stream. You can write wherever you feel most comfortable - in your own room at a desk by the window; the living room; snug (where there is a large selection of books on writing); the kitchen table; one of several suitable spots in the garden including the summerhouse, by the pond, or under the covered pergola. Or you might wish to write somewhere truly inspirational - a short walk or short drive away. As a new venture, we are thrilled to share the reviews below from our first writing guests.

"I went on the retreat to have some space and time to write. I didn’t feel I needed any structured content to the weekend or any prompts to get me going, although that was on offer if required. As a busy single parent, I just needed the opportunity to get writing, and that is just what I did!
My room made me feel like Emily Bronte, and by the window with the stunning views outside was the perfect place to sit and let my imagination flow. I had everything I need and felt totally looked after all weekend.
The food was out of this world! Ian is an amazing cook and everything he made tasted delicious – easily restaurant standard. The food was vegan, and even though I am not vegan, tasted unbelievable and I would never have known it was vegan.
I punctuated my writing with long walks in the countryside and slices of homemade cake with coffee. I had a super productive weekend, and to be honest, I didn’t really want to leave!"

‘Absolutely magical! Staying at this incredible writing retreat was one of the most inspiring and nourishing experiences I've ever had. The large cottage is set in the most breathtaking, peaceful location, perfect for sparking creativity and focus. From the moment I arrived, I felt completely looked after. The hosts are simply incredible: warm, attentive, and genuinely passionate about creating the perfect environment for writers to thrive.
The cottage itself is spotless and cosy, with thoughtful touches like tea and coffee provided in every room, plus reliable WiFi if you need to do a bit of research or connect with the outside world. And the food… wow. Three delicious, home-cooked meals a day that felt like a hug on a plate, and every dish was made with such care and love.
I left feeling inspired, rejuvenated, and deeply grateful. Whether you're working on a novel, journaling, or just need a creative reset, this retreat is a true gem. I can’t wait to return!’
